What does today’s Wordle answer mean?

The term “ninja” refers to a covert agent or mercenary in feudal Japan who specialized in unorthodox warfare. The methods of the ninja included espionage, sabotage, infiltration, assassination, and guerrilla warfare. Their secretive ways have played a significant role in Japanese military history and folklore, often depicted as having supernatural abilities such as invisibility or control over natural elements, which has contributed to the modern pop-cultural image of ninjas.

The origin of the word “ninja” comes from the Japanese characters “忍者”. In the native pronunciation, “nin” means to “stealth” or “endure”, and “ja” is the suffix for “person”. However, in historical documents, ninjas were often referred to as “shinobi”, another reading of the same characters, which can be translated as “to steal away” or “to hide”. The concept of the ninja emerged during the tumultuous times of the Warring States period in Japan, approximately from the 15th to 17th centuries, when their skills were particularly useful and their services were often employed by feudal lords.
