List of Outline Questions

I don’t understand my outline template when my professor puts the following. How am I suppose to build credibility and then introduce myself it seems backwards.

I. Attention getter: Some options here are to ask a question, offer a quote, or give a statistic that will get the audience’s attention. It should be relevant to the speech topic.

II. Build Credibility: What sources have you consulted to make you a credible speaker on your topic?

III. Introduce Yourself: This may sometimes tie in to the “build credibility” section if your own personal experience is part of what makes you a credible speaker on a topic.

Thesis Statement: The thesis statement is a one-sentence summary of what you plan to cover in the presentation and should combine your topic and purpose. This central idea is actually stated to the audience and serves as a preview of the key ideas.

In the credibility section, show that you have researched certain viable sources to demonstrate that what you are about to write is credible and can be taken seriously. The worst thing is to write an essay like a rant. So, it is important to mention the sources you looked up and used for putting the essay together.

Only after you have established that you have credible information, you mention yourself as it relates to the research done.

It may seem backwards, but seems logical to me. The best thing is to follow the instructions as best as you can, even if you disagree with it 🙂
