The New York City Department of Education claims they are restricting access to ChatGPT on its online devices and networks within New York Schools.

Students began using the chatbot to generate essays and find help with their written assignments.
Educators introduced such restrictive measures because of “negative impacts on student learning and concerns regarding the safety and accuracy of content.” – according to Chalkbeat.
“While the tool may be able to provide quick and easy answers to questions, it does not build critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential for academic and lifelong success,” school system official Jenna Lyle told the journalists.
Access to ChatGPT is still possible via devices outside the school network.
This move by the largest US schools system may symbolize a broader initiative with others following suit.
As we wrote earlier, websites (StackOverflow) and even countries (China) are introducing restrictions as to how the newly released chatbot can be used.
