1. Julie and Julia
A heart-warming movie with the brilliant Meryl Streep. It is a great film to watch after a long working day, when all you want is to do is relax. It’s about food, friendly support, fulfilling dreams, and pursuing goals; it’s full of warm comforting colors, charming atmospheres, and the style of France in the 1950s—in one word, it’s full of everything that can make you smile.
Oh, and by the way, just to evaluate Meryl Streep’s acting talent once again—compare her heroine in “Julie and Julia” to Miranda in “The Devil Wears Prada.”
2. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

It is a strange and beautiful story of a 1000-year-old man who gambled with the devil, desperately trying to win every time. Semi-metaphor, semi-parable, this movie will amaze you with its colors, the bold ideas it comes up with, and the cinematography. Oh, and also this is the last movie with Heath Ledger—he died when it was in the middle of production, but still managed to act in it. How? Find out for yourself!
3. Bruce Almighty
This is what I call a not-so-simple movie. At first glance, it is another comedy movie with Jim Carrey. The plot is seemingly cliche: a downtrodden news reporter suddenly gets the power of God (well, not all of it, but still enough to split tomato soup and fulfill the prayers of other people); however, it is the way he uses it that is the most interesting. First enjoying himself as God, Jim Carrey’s protagonist soon realizes that with great power comes great responsibility, and this is the point when the movie turns into a wise parable about faith and humility: not an intrusive one, but kind and humorous.
Oh, and could you find any other actor that could play God as well as Morgan Freeman?
4. Bean
Yet another comedy episode about the (in)famous Mr. Bean! This already speaks for itself. This time, Mr. Bean travels to America, where he suddenly gets to bring an invaluable piece of art to a Los Angeles museum. Guess what happens next….
5. Rush Hour
I don’t know about you, but whenever I see Jackie Chan, I smile immediately. I guess it’s a kind of reflex left from my childhood, when I was almost chained to my VHS player with his Drunken Master, Wheels on Meals, or Rumble in the Bronx. Rush Hour is among his later, more “mature” movies, and one of the most brilliant ones, in my opinion. A perfect way to cheer yourself up.
