Beyond Traditional Policing
Following the release of ChatGPT 3.5, Biola University considered implementing campus-wide AI-detection software but decided against it. Yet, initially, the institution contemplated the adoption of campus-wide AI-detection software as a means to ensure academic integrity. They ultimately rejected this approach. McCabe explains,
“We can’t really police our way out of this… So it might seem counterintuitive, but some of the best ways to promote academic integrity are really the old school methods of small class sizes, faculty-student relationships.”
Different Approaches by Universities
On the other hand, Pepperdine University has adopted a different strategy in dealing with the integration of AI in academic settings. They are actively using software like Turnitin to detect the use of AI in student work. Associate Professor Jennifer Miyake-Trapp from Pepperdine University describes their balanced approach:
“Pepperdine has wisely stepped up… allowing faculty, within reason, to use discretion and to use our professional judgment about the ways in which we’re going to incorporate AI.”
