I have always admired English for its amazing capacity to include both simple and complex words. It goes back to centuries that different cultures and ethnic groups brought their influence in the language, giving us exciting and perplexing cases with words that have the same pronunciation and different spellings. And vice versa.

Working on this article, I dived into the depth of Latin and Greek origins, buoyant French additions and sharp German structures. We try to present the hardest words to spell in the English language, so that you can avoid confusing spelling errors in your academic life and beyond it.

Relying on autocorrect features in our messengers and doc editors serves as a bliss and as a curse. It provides guidance and support on the spot, but has detrimental effects on our spelling skills in the long run. We do understand that not all our readers are going to participate in a Spelling Bee competition where you are asked to write words that are hard to spell. But we also believe that many of you will find useful and interesting words in the text below to reinforce your knowledge of the English spelling rules.

This list includes hard words to spell for different groups and a huge special bonus for Spelling Bee fans. Let’s get started.

Why Some English Words are hard to spell?

Ever asked yourself why certain English words are frequently misspelled or seem challenging to spell? Essentially, there are several spelling rules in English. If you’re not familiar with these, you might find yourself entangled in spelling mistakes due to confusion.

The English language is a melting pot of spellings and pronunciations borrowed from various languages such as Latin, Greek, French, German, and many more. Additionally, certain words may have different spellings in different countries, adding to the confusion.

Consider the word “committee”. This word is derived from the Latin word “committere” which means “to commit”. In English, the double “m” and “t” in “committee” reflect its Latin origin and emphasize the action of commitment, which is central to the function of a committee. Or take the word “ballet” for instance. This word, used to describe a type of performance dance, is borrowed directly from French. In French, “ballet” has the same spelling and almost the same pronunciation. The word originally comes from the Italian “balletto”, a diminutive of “ballo” (dance). The silent “t” at the end of “ballet” is a typical characteristic of many French words that have been adopted into English.

We have tried to outline some common reasons why certain words are hard to spell.

  • Words that are long and contain numerous vowels.
  • Words that include silent letters.
  • The presence of double consonants.
  • Homophones, which are words that sound identical but have different spellings and meanings.
  • Homographs, which are words that share the same spelling but differ in pronunciation, meaning, and origin.
  • Homonyms, which are words that are spelled and pronounced the same but have different meanings.
  • The confusion between the letters ‘e’ and ‘i’.
  • The similar sounds of ‘c’ and ‘k’.
  • The complexity in the pronunciation of ‘y’, ‘ee’, and ‘lee’.
  • The occurrence of double vowels.
  • The confusion between ‘ea’ and ‘ae’.
