Attractive Teacher Attire Boosts Student Engagement, Study Finds

According to a new study featured in Frontiers in Psychology and reported by PsyPost, students are more inclined to participate in school activities and anticipate higher grades when they find their teacher’s attire attractive. Marici and his colleagues recruited 173 students aged 9 to 14 from Suceava, Romania, and nearby villages. The students were shown photographs of the same female teacher dressed in different outfits, one being formal business attire and the other more casual. After viewing the photographs, the students listened to a 6-minute audio recording narrated by the person in the photograph and then filled out questionnaires. The study aimed to measure students’ perception of their teachers’ personality through The Rokeach Value Survey scale, evaluate the quality of teaching through The Instructor Evaluation scale, and gather additional data using items created by Marici and his team.

The study revealed that students’ perception of a teacher’s attire significantly affected their views on the teacher’s personality, quality of teaching, and expected grades. “Students were willing to do extra homework, listen more attentively in class, and stay long after school for training and after-school classes when they perceived their teacher as attractive,” Marici and his colleagues found.

In addition, the researchers noted that “the attractive photo represents the formal business attire, while the unattractive photo is closer to the casual style.”

The researchers argue that these findings imply a deep-rooted connection between students’ perception of their teacher’s attire and critical school outcomes, including the quality of teaching, expected grades, and willingness to participate in learning and extracurricular activities.

“Teachers have a respectable profession and they teach because it is supposed that they love students, their profession, and their school subject. Teachers are expected to be good models in all areas of life and teach for the educational outcome, and their attire serves this purpose,” the researchers elaborated.

Marici and his team suggest that future research should examine other aspects of teacher attractiveness, such as gender, teaching style, facial attractiveness, or voice characteristics. Furthermore, understanding how teacher attire influences students requires more in-depth investigation.
