The AI Shift in Business
According to Microsoft’s new Work Trend Index report, working with AI will become as inherent as our current engagement with the internet. This report surveyed 31,000 individuals across 31 markets between February and March 2023, seeking to understand how AI technologies are revolutionizing workplaces.

However, this growing reliance on generative AI, known for its capacity to create content in response to human input, has stirred concerns about job displacement. A recent Goldman Sachs report suggests that 300 million jobs globally, predominantly office and administrative support roles, could be affected by AI and automation.
Despite these concerns, Microsoft remains optimistic. In a virtual interview with CNBC Make It, Colette Stallbaumer, the general manager for Microsoft 365 and “future of work,” asserts, “We really believe that AI will create more jobs than it replaces.”
Skills for an AI-powered Future
Microsoft’s research revealed that 82% of global leaders and 85% of Asian Pacific leaders believe employees will require new skills for an AI-powered future. Top among these skills are analytical judgment, flexibility, and emotional intelligence, seen as the “new core competencies” not just for technical roles but for all employees.
The report suggests that humans remain at the helm, making critical decisions about AI outputs, emphasizing the need for robust judgment skills. Additionally, emotional intelligence is pivotal in deciding when to leverage AI over human capability. As per leaders, other essential skills for the future include intellectual curiosity, bias detection and handling, and AI delegation (prompts).
AI Skills in High Demand
AI’s influence is already reshaping the job market, with the demand for AI talent far surpassing supply, especially in Asia and the Pacific. The surge in AI talent hiring is most evident in Singapore, Australia, and India, with a growth rate of 565%, 527%, and 487%, respectively, since 2016. Despite this growth, AI jobs are still in demand, with LinkedIn’s chief economist, Karin Kimbrough, optimistic about new opportunities and roles resulting from AI’s proliferation.

In Singapore, AI-related roles pay above the average monthly salary, with roles like machine learning engineers and data engineers earning around $5,800 and $6,100 on average. While salary remains a significant factor in job decisions, professionals show more initiative in acquiring AI-related skills to stay ahead of the curve in an uncertain environment.
