I recently had the pleasure of journeying through the pages of “The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue” by V.E. Schwab, and it was nothing short of magical. The novel dances between the lines of fantasy and historical fiction, painting a rich tapestry of a life that spans centuries, yet remains hidden from the world.

The story unravels around Addie LaRue, a young woman from a small village in France, who, in a desperate act to escape the confines of her life, makes a deal with a dark god. She gains the gift of immortality but at a heartbreaking cost: she is doomed to be forgotten by everyone she meets. As the narrative unfolds, we witness Addie’s journey across centuries and continents, always a part of the world but forever apart from it.

One of the standout elements of this novel is Schwab’s lyrical prose. The story flows seamlessly, moving between Addie’s past and her present, letting us witness the joys, sorrows, loves, and losses of a life lived in the shadows.

The character of Addie LaRue is beautifully crafted. Despite her unique predicament, her emotions, desires, and struggles feel deeply human. Her resilience in the face of eternal loneliness, her quest for meaning in a life that seems endless, and her determination to leave a mark in a world that refuses to see her make her a truly memorable character.

What I found particularly intriguing was the exploration of memory and legacy in the story. Through Addie’s experiences, the book poses profound questions: What does it mean to be remembered? How do we leave a mark on the world? And what is the cost of true freedom?

The relationship dynamics in the book are also worth noting. Without giving away too much, the interactions between Addie and the dark god are a blend of tension, longing, and power play. And then there’s Henry, a character introduced in the modern timeline, who brings a new dimension to Addie’s existence.

If I were to express an opinion, it would be to praise the depth and nuance with which Schwab handles themes of love, loss, and identity. The novel is not just a tale of a woman forgotten by time, but a deep reflection on the human need for connection and recognition. There were moments in the story that left me pensive, thinking about the fleeting nature of life and the footprints we leave behind.

That said, readers looking for a fast-paced plot might find the narrative a tad slow in places. The book thrives on its atmospheric setting, character depth, and philosophical musings rather than on action. However, for those who enjoy a deep, introspective tale, this might be its biggest strength.

In conclusion, “The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue” is a mesmerizing tale of a life lived in the margins of history. V.E. Schwab masterfully weaves a narrative that is both timeless and deeply personal, capturing the essence of a soul untethered by time. It’s a story of love, loss, and the lengths one might go to be truly seen. As I turned the final page, I was left with a feeling of melancholic beauty and a profound appreciation for the moments that define us. This book is a testament to the power of stories and the indelible marks they leave on our souls.

Thoroughly enjoyed Adie LaRue. Were I still in the academic world and had access to “examples” my grades would have been easier to achieve and I would have learned how to write instead of struggling. Luckily, my reports or writing helped pull me up, but I never felt secure about it. As a result I passed on opportunities and offers of mentorship that would have gotten me where I wanted to be instead of leaving me with what could have been.
