Copyleak’s plagiarism detection tool was simple to navigate and had a free usage option. It provided a high level of accuracy when finding stolen content but couldn’t detect AI-paraphrased bits. The AI checking feature presented a great array of possible tech detection that ranged from tracing down GPT 3.5 to Bard. Despite not being most customer-oriented in usability due to no customer support, it showed a valid analysis of AI-generated content.
⚖️ Our verdict⭐⭐⭐⭐
Works great for academic texts that need proof of originality.

Copyleaks is a valuable tool capable of detecting AI created text in different pieces of writing.

An infographic with a short Copyleaks review describing the ways it was tested and how it received an A*Help Score: 86/100

Imagine you find someone else’s work and try to pass it off as your own—that’s plagiarism. It’s usually more about breaking the rules of fair play in school or work than breaking the law. But be careful, because if you use plagiarism to trick someone for your gain, you might be stepping into illegal territory. In universities, if your paper is marked as plagiarized, you, of course, won’t hear feds banging up your door or “that’s the sound of the police” in the background. Still, it may lead to an exclusion from the university.

That’s why finding a quality plagiarism detection matters. Both for you as a student and your professors. A good program of that kind works like a fast detective tracing down the signs of copied content. Some platforms may even help with finding AI generated stuff or text that was simply rephrased. One famous example of the software that presumably does all that is Copyleaks. The service has become well-known and widely-used among educational institutions and professionals. Following its reputation, we decided it would be only fair to test its detection abilities. Now, you can see whether you should trust Copyleaks for yourselves.

Copyleaks Mystery Shopping: How We Tested the Plagiarism Detection Service

Our team tries to work as true detectives: we trace down each step of the customer journey, play out the possible scenarios, and do everything to get all the evidence needed to paint the big picture about the service we review.

Our mystery shopping is organized so that we can evaluate three main criteria of the service: value for money, overall experience, and plagiarism detection quality. To satisfy both your interest and ours, we focus on the features offered by the service and its pricing, as well as the convenience and usability of the website.

The main part of our research, however, is the testing of the plagiarism detection quality. To review all the aspects of the process and include all the possibilities, we included 5 texts in our scenario all dedicated to the discussion of characteristics of a leader:

StatusExpected Results
✍️ Written from scratch
🔍 Found online & submitted
🤖 ChatGPT-paraphrased
🤖 Quillbot-parapharsed
🔠 Online text with interchanged letters❌ / ⚠️

This way we wanted to test how well the particular plagiarism detector would do its work and prove originality/plagiarism both when there’s a 100% certainty and when the text was meddled with. See How We Test Plagiarism Checkers for more details about our testing approach.

In the end, we put all the pieces together and determine the A*Help score of the service, which reflects its quality and usefulness for plagiarism detection purposes. Copyleaks was tested the same way.

Copyleaks’ Plagiarism Detection Quality — 44/50⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The key feature that makes a plagiarism detector successful is the accurate recognition of copied and stolen pieces of text. At least that was what we were looking for when testing Copyleak’s detection abilities.

As was mentioned above, we had 5 different pieces of writing. Each one of these writings went through Copyleak’s plagiarism detector. Below we will discuss the results of this process.

So, the first text, which was 100% human-written, was marked as 92.6% plagiarism-free. This result proves that Copyleaks does a good job of detecting original content. This is also a sign that you can rest assured that if you write a paper yourself, you won’t be falsely accused of plagiarism.

1st text scan at Copyleaks
Human-written text scan at Copyleaks (click to see a larger picture)

The second writing was the one that we just found online. We didn’t reference or quote it but just passed it as our own. This paper, as we expected, was marked as 100% plagiarized. So, if you took somebody else’s text without rightful attribution, Copyleaks would faultlessly point that out as plagiarism.

2nd text scan at Copyleaks
Internet sample scan at Copyleaks (click to see a larger picture)

That’s why we moved on to more intricate examples. Copyleaks was great at detecting unoriginal content in 2 AI-paraphrased papers. It marked the two writing as being 80.35% plagiarized which makes sense since we just took it from the Internet and rephrased it. Remember, simple rewriting doesn’t bring any novelty to the paper and such phrases still need to be cited and referenced.

3d text scan at Copyleaks
AI-paraphrased text scan at Copyleaks (click to see a larger picture)

What about the last text? It was the sneakiest piece of writing, as we took it from the Inetrnet and rephrased using an AI. Unfortunately, Copyleaks didn’t handle such a level of trickery and marked the text taken from the Internet as 100% original content. This led us to believe that the service can’t yet identify AI interventions in writing.

In the end, Copyleaks generally did great at detecting plagiarism and original pieces of writing and even battled AI paraphrasing! Despite not tracking down the letter-manipulations we did with the last piece, this tool presented a high-quality plagiarism detection.

Copyleaks’ Plagiarism Detector: Value for Money — 21/25⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We get that the main thing you are looking for is a tool for plagiarism detection. Honestly though, would you rather choose a website that just spots copied texts, or one that also provides opportunities for AI detection, citation proofreading, etc.? As we see it, it’s always better to have a service that meets the variety of your needs.

Copyleaks can proudly say that it is the platform of that kind. When we searched through the platform, we noted that it offered a bunch of features for text checking. It could analyze  files, as well as text from URL links, and provided an opportunity to do an academic type of proofreading. This was particularly helpful since our works included references which needed to be properly cited and formatted.

What made the platform stand out even more in our eyes was the variety of extra services. Need AI detection? You can do it with Copyleaks. Trying to establish if the work was translated from another language? It will do a cross-language search for you. Need to compare the paper with some other to see if they are similar? No need to go anywhere – Copyleaks will handle that for you.  It even has an option to extract text from images which is most helpful when you have a photo of your lecture notes and need to use them for a presentation, for example.

As for the sources it can detect, it covers all the possible ones. As we checked, it can find references from the Internet, identify them from the documents you uploaded, and also uses its own database to define references.

Looking to check plagiarism for free? We were pleasantly surprised when we figured that Copyleaks allowed us to try all these features at no cost. There was a limit of 10 pages as well as a word limit per one detection but that was more than enough to check our papers. Of course, the platform had a paid plan but it was rather cheap as well – only $10.99/month with a 100-page limit. And if that doesn’t fit into your budget, the platform also offers discounts to make the pricing more pleasant.

Copyleaks showed that it is worth its price, providing a variety of helpful features that can help both students and professors more than just with plagiarism detection.

Copyleaks Plagiarism Detector’s Overall Experience — 21/25⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Now, since plagiarism detectors are mostly online tools, they need to be convenient. A lot of aspects contribute to higher usability, such as opportunities to install app extensions, support, and registration. Mostly, Copyleaks showed that it is practical and simple in use.

Copyleaks' main page
Copyleaks’ main page (click to see a larger picture)

The website was very intuitive which allowed us to quickly navigate through the features and the detection process itself. We were also able to try it before registering, so we knew what we were signing up for. The creation of a profile itself was also quick and easy and allowed to use our Google or Facebook accounts to register. Was there a browser extension so we could check papers in google docs or on websites? No. Nonetheless, since the process of plagiarism detection on the platform didn’t take more than a couple of seconds, it wasn’t such a big of an inconvenience.

One of the reasons why Copyleaks was so easy to use was its support system. When we entered the platform we were met with a brief onboarding on how to work with it. There were guides that explained the basic features and covered possible questions. We also noticed that there was a support contact form in case of any possible issues with the service. All of this definitely contributed to our feeling of confidence during interaction with the plagiarism detector.

The organization of the payment system is also very important. Copyleaks recognizes that. That’s why, if you decide to purchase a plan here, you will be provided with a bunch of purchasing opportunities varying from wallet payments to card ones.

All in all, Copyleaks was not only useful but also usable (pun intended). If we stumbled upon it when searching the Internet, there would hardly be a chance that we would leave looking for other options.

Does it provide a faultless plagiarism recognition? 9 out of 10 times – yes. In general, if you are a student, wanting to check the paper for plagiarism beforehand, Copyleaks will help do that. And, if you are a teacher, who wants to find out whether somebody copied text online or even rephrased it, this tool will certainly prove to be right for you. After all, if you don’t have to overcome the sleekest cheating schemes of all times, Copyleaks will do its job and do it well.

I tried the OCR scan with some of my handwritten notes, and it worked smoothly. This tool is going to save me so much time.

Mia Sosa September 29, 2023

Agreed! I was hoping to get all the text checking done in one place. Looks like I’ll need a separate tool for grammar and spelling. But i’m sure it’s gonna be added in one of the future updates
