Mexico’s most formidable drug cartel, the Sinaloa Cartel, has issued a direct order to its members: cease transporting fentanyl into the United States. This surprising directive comes in the wake of heightened scrutiny and pressure from US law enforcement, DailyMail reports.

The command originates from Los Chapitos, a faction within the Sinaloa Cartel managed by the four sons of the infamous Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán. The Wall Street Journal revealed that this decision is likely a response to the Biden administration urging the Mexican government to take more rigorous action against the cartel, which has been the primary source of the lethal drug’s proliferation in the US.

Recent tensions within the cartel have mounted after the arrest and subsequent extradition of Ovidio Guzmán, one of El Chapo’s sons. Following this, there have been reports of brutal punishments meted out to those who defy the ban on fentanyl production and sales, including assassinations and kidnappings.

Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, has been responsible for a staggering number of overdose deaths in the US. Last year alone, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported approximately 109,680 overdose deaths, with around 75,000 attributed to fentanyl and related synthetic opioids. The vast majority of these drugs enter the US via Mexican cartels.

Ovidio Guzmán’s recent extradition to the US and his not guilty plea on charges ranging from drug trafficking to money laundering has further intensified the atmosphere of unease within the cartel ranks. The US has already indicted Ovidio, his brothers, and numerous associates.

An interesting twist to the narrative is the Sinaloa Cartel’s strategy to temporarily halt fentanyl production in hopes that the US will redirect its focus towards their rival, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, run by another infamous drug lord, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes. A member of the Sinaloa Cartel mentioned to The Wall Street Journal that they anticipate an uptick in the export of other drugs, like cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine, to offset the loss in revenue from the fentanyl ban.

The chilling reality of the cartel’s power was evident when bodies of men were found tortured with fentanyl pills scattered over them as a gruesome warning to others who might flout the cartel’s edicts.

Adding to the atmosphere of fear, over the past ten days, numerous individuals linked with the fentanyl trade have mysteriously disappeared or been abducted. The palpable fear prevents many families from formally reporting these incidents to the authorities.

As the production and movement of fentanyl see a decline, US officials remain vigilant, expecting Mexican cartels might shift their focus to trafficking other drugs or even firearms.

In a move to defend their reputation, the four Guzmán brothers released a statement earlier this year, categorically denying any involvement in the production or sale of fentanyl, labeling themselves as “victims of persecution.”

In 2022, the DEA made significant seizures, including 58.4 million fentanyl pills and 13,000 pounds of fentanyl powder, which is equivalent to a staggering 387.7 million lethal doses.
