Jane Wilson
ARTcata Gallery
112 Salmon Lane.
Arcata, CA, 95521

Dear Jane,

This letter is an accompanying document to the portfolio of my artwork I sent you earlier. The reason why I decided to contact you is that I would like to offer my paintings to be exhibited in the ARTcata Gallery. I know many artists send their portfolios to you almost every day, but I believe my oeuvre is to some extent different, and thus more interesting for you as a gallery curator.

I majored in graphic design and illustration: in 2011 I graduated from the Arcata College of Visual Arts in a corresponding specialty. While studying, I regularly participated in statewide and national competitions of art. I won first prize at the “Coastal Art Visions” contest in 2008 and 2010; I won third prize in the “National Young Artists Contest” (NYAC) in 2009; I also was a finalist of NYAC in 2011.

My work have been exhibited in many galleries across the United States and abroad. In particular, I have been exhibiting my artwork in the “84 Gallery” in New York, the “Quicksilver Arts Gallery” in Seattle, “Boston Arts” in Boston, “Rain&Rain” in Chicago, the “Z Gallery” in Saint-Louis, and in other smaller galleries. My artworks are also stored in private collections in Greece, China, and Russia.

Critics who reviewed my expositions stressed their calmness and on the simplicity of forms (Mark Jacobs, “Frogments” magazine); some of them noticed the resemblance with the geometric oeuvre of Vasiliy Kandinskiy (Stephanie Atkinson, “36.6”). Brian Davidson, a curator at the 84 Gallery in New York wrote in his review that “Mr. Hayes seems to have a natural sense of proportion; all of his works which are exhibited here instill the feeling of solitude and balance. Simple shapes, parallel and curvy lines, calm colors—you cannot really search for a deep meaning in Hayes’ works. They are pure mood—meditative and still.”

I really would like to have my works exhibited in your art gallery; I believe it would be of a benefit for both you and me. Thank you for your time and consideration. May you need any additional information, you can always contact me via the aforementioned email address or telephone number.
